Fire Pit & Outdoor Fireplace Installation

Wood Burning - Gas - Propane

There's nothing that transforms a backyard quite like a fire feature. Whether it's a custom built-in fire pit surrounded by a paver patio and seating wall, or a full outdoor fireplace that becomes the architectural centerpiece of your outdoor living space, B&F Landscaping designs and builds fire features that Indianapolis homeowners use year-round.

Every project starts with a 3D design rendering so you can see exactly how your fire feature will look and fit into your outdoor space before we build. We handle everything from design through final installation gas line coordination, paver surrounds, seating walls, and all finishing details included.

Serving Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, Noblesville, Zionsville, and the greater Indianapolis area.

Services

Fire Pit & Outdoor Fireplace Services We Offer

We build a wide range of fire features from simple circular fire pits to elaborate outdoor fireplace structures with custom mantels and seating.

Built-In Fire Pits

A permanent, custom-built fire pit is the most popular fire feature we install. We construct fire pits using natural stone, manufactured stone veneer, or pavers — designed to integrate seamlessly with your patio and seating wall layout. Available in round, square, or rectangular configurations. Wood-burning, propane, and natural gas options available.

Outdoor Fireplaces

An outdoor fireplace makes a bold architectural statement and creates a true focal point for your outdoor living area. We build full masonry and stone veneer outdoor fireplaces with custom mantels, hearths, and optional built-in storage. Wood-burning and gas inserts available. Pairs beautifully with a pergola or pavilion overhead.

Fire Pit Seating Walls

Most of our fire pit installations include a surrounding seating wall — a built-in paver or natural stone wall at the perfect height for seating that also defines the space visually. We cap seating walls with smooth, comfortable cap stones in a finish that complements your patio pavers.

Gas Line Coordination

For natural gas fire pits and fireplaces, we coordinate with licensed gas line contractors to run the supply line to your fire feature. We manage the full process so you don't have to deal with multiple contractors.

Fire Pit Tables and Inserts

Prefer a cleaner, more modern look? We can also install high-end fire pit tables and gas inserts with glass media or lava rock — ideal for covered outdoor spaces or contemporary patio designs.

Full Outdoor Living Integration

Most fire feature projects are part of a larger outdoor living space. We can incorporate your fire pit or fireplace into a complete design that includes:

- Paver patio surround

- Built-in seating walls

- Pergola or pavilion overhead

- Outdoor kitchen or grill station

- Landscape lighting

- Retaining walls and grading

Wood Burning vs. Gas Which Is Right for You?

One of the first decisions you'll make is fuel type. Here's a straightforward comparison:

Wood Burning

- Authentic crackling fire, real wood smell

- No gas line or utility connection required

- Lower upfront cost

- Requires storing and managing firewood

- Some municipalities have restrictions on open burning — we verify before building

Natural Gas

- Instant on/off with a switch or remote

- No wood storage, no ash cleanup

- Consistent flame, no smoke

- Requires a gas line run to the feature (we coordinate this)

- Slightly higher upfront cost, lower long-term effort

Propane

- Same convenience as natural gas

- No gas line required — runs off a tank

- Good option when gas line access isn't practical

- Tank needs periodic refilling

Not sure which is right for your space and lifestyle? We'll walk you through it during your free consultation based on how you plan to use the feature and what's practical for your property.

“We are so grateful to B & F Landscaping for all the awesome work they have completed for us. They provide a visual design before we contracted them for both our backyard and front yard renovation and provided expert and professional design consultations. We are thrilled with the results. Additionally, the communication and immediate responses set them apart from all other companies in the industry.

In addition to the exceptional exterior remodels at our home, they also expertly designed and executed an interior remodel of our rental property’s kitchen. This company can really do it all!!!!

Francisco, Beatriz, and his team are trustworthy, great communicators, and a company that I have, and will continue to refer to my closest friends/family”

Frequently Asked Questions

  •  A custom built-in fire pit typically ranges from $3,500 to $12,000 or more depending on size, materials, fuel type, and whether a seating wall is included. A simple wood-burning fire pit with a basic paver surround starts around $3,500–$5,000. A gas fire pit with a full paver patio and built-in seating wall is typically $8,000–$20,000 or more as part of a larger project. We provide detailed itemized quotes during your free consultation.

  • Outdoor fireplaces are a larger investment — typically $8,000 to $25,000 or more depending on size, materials, and complexity. Full masonry structures with custom mantels and stone veneer are on the higher end. Gas fireplaces with an insert are often more affordable than full masonry wood-burning builds. We'll walk you through options that fit your goals and budget.

  • Permit requirements vary by municipality and fire feature type. Built-in gas fire features typically require a permit in most Indianapolis-area cities. Wood-burning fire pits may or may not require a permit depending on your specific township. We verify all permit requirements before starting your project.

  • Yes — with the right design, your fire feature can be enjoyed from early spring through late fall comfortably, and even on mild winter evenings. Gas fire features are especially well-suited to year-round use since there's no wood to store or keep dry.

  • Most local codes require a minimum of 10 feet from any structure, fence, or overhanging branches. We assess your specific site during the consultation and design the feature placement to meet all local requirements while maximizing your enjoyment of the space.

  • A standalone fire pit with seating wall typically takes 2–4 days. Larger projects that include a full patio, outdoor fireplace, and multiple elements may take 1–2 weeks. We'll give you a clear timeline during the estimate process

  •  Wood-burning fire pits require occasional ash removal and annual inspection of the firebox. Gas fire features should be inspected annually and the burner and ignition system checked at the start of each season. The stone or paver surround requires minimal maintenance — occasional cleaning and resealing every 3–5 years if sealed.

  • Yes — we can often incorporate a fire feature into an existing patio. Depending on the layout and what's already there, we may need to modify or extend part of the existing patio to create a proper surround. We assess the existing work during the consultation and let you know exactly what's involved.
